1. Sakitama Kofun Cluster

The Sakitama Kofun Cluster is located in Sakitama (in Gyoda City) from where the prefecture’s name is believed to have derived. Nine large kofun are found here, making it one of the largest clusters of kofun in Japan.

It is believed that these keyhole-shaped kofun with many commonalities were constructed consecutively over about 150 years, between the end of the fifth century and the beginning of the seventh .

Research activities and improvements of the site are ongoing, ever since it was first established as “Sakitama Fudoki No Oka” (The Hill Demonstrating the Culture, Climate, and Geography of Sakitama ) in 1967.
