④Futagoyama Kofun
The keyhole-shaped Futagoyama Kofun, with a length of approximately 132 meters, is the largest in Saitama Prefecture. It is believed to have been built during the first half of the sixth century.
The name ‘Futagoyama’, or twin peaks, comes from the fact that the mound resembles two hills. It features a wide protrusion, called ‘tsukuridashi’, from the middle bank between surrounding double moats. This feature is also recognizable at Inariyama, Teppoyama, and Shogunyama Kofun. It is believed that haniwa sculptures and earthenware were once decorated in alignment in a space in the protrusion.
Thorough excavation started in 2017, and some haniwa and clay ware items have been unearthed, with many new findings expected in the future.
