The Sakitama Kofun Cluster |
⑦Okunoyama Kofun
The Okunoyama Kofun is believed to have been built in the middle of the sixth century, based upon excavated earthenware and haniwa sculptures, and has a length of 66 meters.
Like the other mounds of the Sakitama Kofun Cluster, this was surrounded by two square moats. The north-west corner of the outer moat was, however, destroyed by the construction of the Teppoyama Kofun some time later, demonstrating how close the mounds are situated.
Numerous pieces of haniwa and earthenware were excavated from the protrusion located on the west of the mound. Among them was a rare ‘komochitsubo’ jar, a big jar with four small jars attached to its shoulder. None of the chambers in the Okunoyama Kofun have been excavated yet, but underground radar detection searches revealed that it is highly likely to contain a stone coffin.
